This was the
first car owned by Dr. Davis. It was a 1933 Three Window
Coupe with top chopped 6". During the early days of
Drag Racing most cars were owner built and driven. Classes
were mostly for year and type of car: Dragster, Coupe, Sedan,
etc. No class distinction was acknowledged for engine size
or modification. Coupes ran against coupes, sedans against
sedans, etc. This car was running a 1936 Ford Flat Head
with Edelbrock High Rise Duel Carb Manifold with Stromberg
Carbs, modified ignition, and headers straight out (most
beautiful sound). Fastest time was 98mph in quarter
mile. Not fast enough to take on the early post war big
Mercury V-8s. After the organization of the National Hot
Rod Association in 1951 (of which Dr. Davis was a Charter
Member), classes were organized which took into consideration
weight to horsepower among other regulations. This car was
sold to a high school/college friend who proceeded to win many
competitions with the car essentially the same. He later
installed the Hemi engine pictured below and cleaned plow. |
